jackie: One of the references I found at the old Native Fam. res.. Cter. says that he was born in Wisconsin in 1814, but I'llbet that was part of Canada back then wasn't it?

if Benjamin served in the rmy during the civil war, you need to go to the civil War data Base. type the following into your search engine: civil War database and go to the web site. clickon soldiers and Sailers dtabase(I think that is what the link is) and fil in the information.

Yes, I have this information and have been doing a lot of research. I am trying to find out who his parents were - according to the obituary I have (the actual clipping from the newpaper) his father was a fur trader and his mother 1/2 sioux. She died when he was 5 months old. Since the obit lists his birthday as August 1, 1814 - she would have died in January of 1815. Since his father was a fur trader - he was raised by his uncle Henry Aungie. Again all this from the obituary. I have been able to find his civil war service, he is listed on many census records, etc. I know all his children, etc. BUT who were his parents? His obit even states he went to the school at Mackinaw, but I am having trouble getting those records online, I will have to order the microfilm sent to my locale library. Some of my family told stories all my life that were descendants of Crazy Horse - others that we were descendants of Wabasha (just not which wabasha). If a Henry Aungie raised him then on the 1837 List of Dakota mixed-bloods to receive money under the 1837 treaty. (M574, Special Files of the Office of Indian Affairs, 1807-1904, Roll 59, File 200, National Archives, Washington, D.C.) Listed there I find a William Dickson, Jane Dickson, Henry Onji, Mary Dickson Onji, Rosette Onji, AND Benjamin Dyonne. They are listed one after the other. Now in my research, Aungie/Ange/Auger/Onji/Onju/Lefebve all all variations of the same name. Henry Onji is probably Henry Aungie (son of Augustin Ange and Pelagie Wabasha. How many children did Augustin an Pelagie have, did one die in 1815...did any others have a child??? So many questions and I don't know where else to look Bebe PS I also added obit Attachments:BAD Young Obit (1).pdf (760.4 KB)

Thank you Herman,
We have looked at the at this possibility for his father, we also have considered Augustin Ange since the obit states he was raised by his uncle, Henry Aungie. How do you link him to William Aitkin...when you state"benjamin atkin dyomme young stated his mother was a sister of old Wabasa" - where did you get this information? Are any of the women listed in you reply sisters of any of the old Wabasha?
I am ordered some microfilm for more research...I question that the A.D. in his name stands for Aitkin - my grandmother has made notes of him with the name Benjamin Acon Duncan born near St Paul August 1, 1814. It also uses Duncan in reports on him from the civil war.
I was also lucky enough to find a letter from him to his daughter Emily (my Great-Great-Grandmother) just before he died.
I am on a hunt for his parents and will not stop until I find them.
We have some bandolier bags and a pipe that he owned, my cousins and I inherited several boxes of stuff from my granmother and great aunt. We have found photos of his daughter Emily (my 2g-grandmother and her daughter. Also Uncle's Joe and John and Stella Young (we are assuming Uncle's Joe and John are Campbell's but are trying to validate.
Once I do, I will be happy to post these photos so other descendant can see.
I love these boards and thank you for maintaining them.

Brenda, your latest post is very interesting. I found the information on him at several web sites, one of the websites9Telus planet) has metis history for the Midwest. I will post the link. the reference did not mention which of his wives was of the Wabasha family. Benjamin is mentioned in other references also. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Alexander_Aitkenwww.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnaitkin/WmAitkin.htmusers.usinternet.com/dfnels/aitken.htmwww.redriverancestry.ca/WARREN-WILLIAM-WHIPPLE.phpwww.telusplanet.net/public/dgarneau/metis.htm this last reference is the metis one I mentioned. I copied and pasted what was in the reference about him. 1805 1805 (I)-William Alexander Aitken (Aitkin) aka Aitki of Edinbugh, Scotland died September 16, 1851 Swan River Post (Aitkinville) arrived in the Great Lakes region being employed by John Drew about this time. It is said he had at least two wives (IV)-Striped Cloud Madeline Ermatinger Metis Payshahquodoguay daughter of (III)-Charles Oakes Ermatinger (1776-1853) and Charlotte Kalawabide (Kadowaubeda) and Gingioncumigoke. He is said to have 25 Metis children some named Alfred murdered at Red Ceder Lake about 1836, John, Matilda, Roger, Nancy, Elizabeth, Ann, Julie E., Salina, Robert, Amanda, Sarah J., Childe, Isabel, Henry and Edgar. William later worked for the American Fur Company in William Morrison'e Fond du Lac Department. Later he was chief trader at Sandy Lake operating into Pembina to the west and Rainy Lake to the north and south to the Crow Wing River.

Yes, I have found and read all of these. Not state that Benjamin was his child so we would really just be assuming. I have read all the entries at this site www.telusplanet.net/public/dgarneau/metis.htm but still no mention of his birth or death of a parent I can link him to without question. Some even say he was the Benjamin Cadotte that was orphaned and adopted by the Cadotte family but I don't believe this is actual. I read another tidbit from by grandmothers "journal" (a little book she has notes on for both sides of family, recipes, etc) and she states "his father was french man(baker for soldiers) married Margaret Campbell year ? He was educated at Green Bay Wisc., clerked for Gen Sibley fought in civil war co G - 5th Minn"Now with this new piece of information, I am going to search about cooks or bakers for armies. I went to my local library request some files on births, deaths, etc not available online for births, deaths, etc. Once I get and review, I will be happy to share. She has also documented the Campbell side (much easier to find). I have a few photos I think may be Harriet Campbell Young but am trying to verify. Some of the photos she (or her mother) wrote on the back who they were and some they did not. Now - the most exciting thing. We found an old tintype or daggoroyte photo of a man. Tintype or daggoroyte photos were extremely popular in the 1860's to 1870's. They were also used throughout the civil war to capture battles, life around camp, AND solider portraits. The man is wearing a medal on this chest and I also researched this, it is a civil war veterens medal. Minnesota Co. G, 5th Regiment was made up of civil war veterans (most had served their initial 3 years and re-enlisted. BAD was one of these. We also have a box that contained a rosary and fringe (or frieze) from the Minnesota 5th regiment flag. I researched this also. If you go online to see a photo of the flag, it is missing fringe on on complete side and part of the bottom. BAD was a color guard according to civil war records. Putting this all can safely research together - we have determined it is Benjamin A.D. Young. Again, I will share all I find on my Great Great Great Grandfather and hope other descendants will share what they find. I think he would have want us to. Brenda Attachments:

I could not find a listing for Dyomme(the D in his name). just click on the letter of the alphabet and go from there. I was told that Dyomme meant Young in English. have you tried searching for Dyomme family genealogyin your search engine? www.nosorigines.qc.ca/genealogielistfamily.aspx?patronyme=0&ix=D&lng=en

that is great.it heps to find the other spellings of his name. I don't know if he had a land allotment at Santee. One other place to check,is the NARA and ask for a copy of his heirship Report. contact maryfrances.ronan@nara.gov give her his English and Indian names, what tribe he was with, and when he died. she will contact you ina week or so,depeding on busy she is ,and et you know what she found and how much a copy of the report will cot.

Will they have it recorded who his parents were? He lived on Santee Agency for many years...I am not sure if he had an allotment. I never researched that as I am strictly interested in my ancestry, who I descended from. We knew our whole lives we were part Indian and got bits and pieces. I wish I had sat down with my grandmother before she passed away and took notes.
When an Indian went to live on a reservation, did that have to list their parents or prove they were from that tribe? Would it be recorded anywhere?

Hi Hermin,
Quick question for you - in your first posting for me you stated "Benjamin Aitken Dyomme Young, stated that his mother was a sister of old Wabasha". Where did you get this information and which Wabasha was considered old wabasha.
I have found a letter to my great aunt (deceased) from another relative who stated his great grandfather told him he was descended from Wabasha but we don't know how or which one.
Thanks Brenda

bebepalmer: re. the heirship report, if NARA does have one for him, it may or may not list who his parents were. it will list who his wife(s) were, how and when they married, if they separated and how, and when the wife died, and her tribal affiliation.it will also list if the wife was married previously ,to whom, etc. I checked the list of Santee Allotees, and if they had an heirship Report, it also gives the number heirship Report Number.there's none for henriett his wife, but there are allotments listed for the following Youngs: Alexander 103, Benjamin 94, Emily Young-Wormwood 104, Frank 99.
I found the information re. Benjamin Aitken's remark in a book by Wozniak.i will go through it and try to find his remark and post it for you.

bebepalmer: here is the excerpt from wozniak's book, which tes about Benjamin's mother. I sure goofed, and am so sorry. His mother was a sister to Wabasha II's mother(Unknown).so WabashaII would be his first cousin. the Santee Tribal office in Niobrara NE would have the information. you need to write to the tribal enrollment office there. do not call them,as they will not reply. Also, you might try the MN Historical society as they alan Woolworth's files on a lot of the Mdewakanton Dakotas.also try the Wisconsin State Historical Society Archives. i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/kouklamu/dcdd3434-b618-4964-83ae-732337729b2b_zps63a5cff0.jpg
